Advice for Studying Applied Math at Midd

How does a math major build a strong background in applied math? Easy! We offer a great selection of Applied Math courses.

As part of your math major at Midd, you must take 5 MATH electives at the 200-level or above and a 700-level Senior Seminar (see the Math Major Requirements). If you want to build a math major with a strong background in applied math, here is what we recommend:

• Take MATH 0226 Differential Equations as soon as possible (pre-reqs are MATH 0122 and MATH 0200)
  • You can take this concurrently with MATH 0223 Multivariable Calculus.
  • This opens the door for more advanced elective options in applied math!
  • This is also a great course to prepare you for summer REUs and undergraduate research opportunities in applied math.
• Take an advanced differential equations elective: MATH 0315 Mathematical Modeling (pre-req MATH 0226) or MATH 0326 Partial Differential Equations (pre-reqs MATH 0223 and MATH 0226)
• Build your computational skills by taking one of MATH 0228 Intro to Numerical Analysis (pre-req MATH 0122 and MATH 0200) or MATH0328 Numerical Linear Algebra (pre-req MATH 0200)
• For your remaining electives, choose whatever math courses interest you! Here are some other MATH electives that could be great additions to your applied math background: 
  MATH 0247, MATH 0310*, MATH 0311, MATH 0318, MATH 0325*, or MATH 0410

*MATH 0310 Probability and MATH 0325 Complex Analysis are strongly recommended for students wishing to pursue graduate work in applied mathematics.

Applied Math Senior Seminars

We currently offer two senior seminars in applied mathematics. Both seminars have a prerequisite of either MATH 0315 and MATH 0326.
